HMCS Algonquin DDH283 Fleet Review 1985

Algonquin is one of a class of four Tribal Class Helicopter Destroyers in the Canadian Navy. She was laid down Sept 1969 and commissioned Sept 1973 at Davie Shipbuilding Ltd. Ship is 425 feet loa,50 feet beam and 4,200 tons full load. Engines are COGOG 50,000 shp,speed 29kts and carries two Sea King A/S helos. Since this photo was taken the ships have undergone and extensive update/reconfiguration substantially altering the profile.

She was a beautiful ship, but rode like a dog in any beam sea. One learned pretty quick how to wrap ones legs and arms around the bunk supports if you didn't want to end up on the deck everytime she rolled. The configeration of the two funnels made her appear to be a larger radar contact than she actually was. The new single funnel greatly reduced her signature. NGS in the Canadian Navy died when they got rid of her 5"54.
