F50 HMS KIMBERLEYThis photograph, from my late father in law's collection, was given to him by an AB from the Kimberley when she served on Red Sea convoys in 1941. I am pretty sure the photo will have been taken when she was on sea trials in 1938/9 prior to being accepted by the navy. She was a K class destroyer built by Thornycroft at Southampton and was commissioned in Dec 1939. She had an illustrious career being involved in the routing of a whole squadron of German destroyers during the first Battle of Narvik in April 1940. She then headed for the Med where she played a major role in the evacuation of troops from Greece and Crete. Completed her war service patrolling the Greek Islands and on May 8th,1945 the surrender the German forces on Rhodes was completed on board. The 117 Germans were then transferred to Alexandria. Decommissioned at Devonport in 1945 and sold for scrap in March 1949.
