Cargo ship Venus moored in Tartous, Syria

Photo of the cargo vessel Venus (IMO 6424014) quayside in harbour of Tartous, Syria in 2000.
The 2,948 tons cargo ship Venus was built as Germany registered Friederike ten Doornkaat by Lindenau, Kiel, Germany in 1964. The Friederike ten Doornkaat changed name in 1973 to Franciska Schulte, in 1985 to Francis, in 1988 to Iliyana, in 1989 to Sun Bird, in 1992 to Omiros, in 1995 to Victory, same year to Victory 9, in 1996 to Ola, in 1997 to MGD 1, in 1998 to Laluna de Mar I and in 1999 to Venus. It almost looks like nobody wants her, must be a bad built ship or maybe she is haunted? :-)

With thanks and © P.W. Hobday.

I was on this vessel in 1984, as Chief Engineer.
We spent most of our time rebuilding hatch covers.
She then called "Franciska Schulte", and operated by Hanseatic Shipping Co., Cyprus.

Fantastic, she is still afloat? Friederike ten Doornkaat was my first ship as radio officer. Fm Oct 67-Sep 68. Lots of adventures, calling ports on 5 continents with this tramper. Her solid McGregors hatches saved our lives in a very hard storm!

I was 1978 as Chief Eng. onboard of Franciska Schulte (Hanseatic Shipping Comp.)

There is an extremely rude nautical ballad which begins:
"Twas on the good ship Venus,
By George you should have seen us
. . ."
The rest is not fit for family consumption, but I am sure there are a few matelots reading this who know it by heart!
