Patria entering no. 1 lock at Trollhättan
6 hours and 60 miles after picture #5009 was taken, Patria had reached Trollhättan from Gothenburg and enters here the first flight of 3 locks on the way up to Lake Vänern in the centre of Sweden. I managed to get a whole series of pictures this day, 11 May 2008, showing the whole process, including a peek through the side window of the bridge as it rose to my camera's height.

I believe the cargo ships and tankers are specially built to fit the locks in this southern part of Sweden. The Göta Kanal is navigable all the way up to Stockholm, 550 km away, but the locks at the northern end are smaller. This means that the commercial traffic stops in Lake Vänern. During the summer there are passenger boats that take tourists all the way - it takes about a week but is very expensive - I think most of the tourists on those boats are American! I hope to catch a picture of one of those passenger boats in a Trollhättan lock one of these days.
This photo was taken at 8 pm when the sun was almost setting, so the quality is not as good as I would like it to be, by the way.

Oh, yes the Saab museum at Trollhättan is open to the public and even signposted from the main road. I am very bad in this respect, for example I worked at Volvo for over 25 years within 100 yards of their museum in Gothenburg and yet never visited it until last year, after I had finished working with them!

All the best Andrew.

A nice photo in a very small lock. It must be a special experience to sail the route.
