M.V. Shearwater dredger

This is great front view of the M.V. Shearwater, a Moray Council owned dredger, just before she enters the harbour of Findochty. She is mainly used to maintain the harbours around the Moray Firth and is great fun to watch her operating.

Comments:
I haven't seen roman numerals on the bow for a long time, how old is this vessel?

This is one of the best pictures of the dredger I have seen so far. Do you have or know where I can find any pictures of the ship/ crew in the 1990's. My Grandad was engineer for over 15 years until he retired in 1998.

She is now about 40 years old and she is due for replacement as far as I know.
I've not found any other photographs on her crew, sorry.

This vessel was built in 1968 by Hall, Russel and Co Aberdeen. The vessel's documentation actually shows Her Majesty as the first owner. The vessel normally operates with a crew of 5- Master, Chief Engineer, Mate, Cook and Crane Driver. The vessel usually operates on a 17 day on 4 day off basis, and used to operate all over Scotland. However, the age of the vessel and the increasing likelihood of major failures means that the vessel sticks to the Moray Firth where they are close to the shipyards. The vessel is equipped with two Bergius-Kelvin T6 185BHP main engines, a Bergius-Kelvin T6 derated to 155BHP which drives the dredge pump, Cummins 4BTA3.9 35kW, 159A, 220V DC generator, a Lister 35kW 159A 220V DC generator, and Beta Marine Kubota BV3300G 12kW 220V DC generator. The vessel has two Donkin electro-hydraulic steering systems. The crane is a Priestman Lion crane with a Caterpillar diesel engine driving it.

I served as the vessel's Chief Engineer between August 2007 and March 2009.
