Looks as if she could be laid up

Added by H G Perry on 12 February 2008.
She is laid up. She is empty and not alongside the dock to load any cargo, she has just been painted and her name is painted out so obviously she is waiting for a new owner who will give her a new name.
I myself for several years was Chief Engineer of a tramp 25, 000 ton steam tanker. Whenever we reached home port of Texas City, Texas, and were in the process of tying up, the Port Engineer would be on the dock looking for me, when he saw me he would give me a thumbs up meaning we had another cargo or a thumbs down meaning, Shut Her Down Chief, we had no cargo at the moment and everyone was about to be laid off except for the Captain and myself.
A hell of a way to make a living being on a tramp freighter or a tramp tanker.
