HMS Beagle, pennant no. H319, in the Gulf, 1969

Coastal Survey Vessel HMS Beagle, seen here in November 1969 during a naval exercise. Built by Brooke Marine at Lowestoft and launched on 7th September 1967.
Despite her modest size - she displaced 1,160 tons when fully loaded - she was originally designed for overseas work, although in her later years she was more involved in work around the UK coastline.
She had a complement of 42, including five officers.
When she first commissioned, in 1968, charting was a labour-intensive operation, but Beagle's integrated navigation and survey system, combining input from precision ranging radar and sonars, meant she could process charts in real time as she gathered data. She carried a nine-metre survey motor boat.
She was paid off in 2002.

Having served the first commision on the Beagle both coastal and in the Persion Gulf off Dubia it is very nice to see the ship under way at relative speed instead of slow speed surveying.

I recall getting drunk on the Beagle, The lads had played rugby in Sharjah around Christmas 69 and Me and Snowy Wainright went back to the ship for, of course it was customary to take a drink of Rum, from each glass in the mess. The last year of the RUM issue. I was with AAC at the time.

I joined HMS Beagle in Lowestoft as a stoker, straight from Raleigh. We surveyed off Dundee at Budden Ness, docking at Camperdown Docks in Dundee, then sailed to Dubai via, , Gibralter, Freetown, Simonstown then Bahrein, 8 weeks to get to Bahrain.. Surveyed off Dubai..When we finished there we were sailing for Bahrain and lost a blade from the propeller..then home.. and 6 weeks leave..

While in Dubai I had a few pics of the navy lads, maybe you can remember the rugby game at Christmas Army Air Corps December 1969 or 1970

I don't recall any rugby game, but then Beagle was with Bulldog at the time, I do remember a 'swap' we had Army guys on board ship for a week and some Navy guys went into the mountains with the Army..

I took this photograph during a one-day visit to HMS Nubian while she and the minesweepers were on an exercise. I was an RAF sergeant billeted with the Royal Anglian Regiment at Hamala camp on Bahrain - but no Navy representatives volunteered to share our tin huts and the zillions of flies! Our little RAF detachment looked after the radar guarding the Saudi border. We didn't have any mountains to speak of, so I guess you mean they went to the mainland.

I was on Beagle from when she commissioned at Brooke Marine until June 1970 as a Stoker PO. I was lucky to spend some time ashore up the Gulf with the party climbing old lookout towers an.d erecting flags which were used by thoe ship for visual fixes.
