Ships and Harbours
No: 3362   Contributor: Lee Brown   Year: 2007   Manufacturer: J. Samuel White, Cowes, United Kingdom   Country: United Kingdom

Pictured at Chatham Historic Dockyard in April 2006 is HMS CAVALIER. Built in 1944 at Samuel White's Yard, Isle of Wight she served in WW2 in the Arctic and Western Approaches before joining the Pacific Fleet as the war drew to a close. Because of her high speed capability she was selected to serve as escort to RMS Queen Mary and RMS Queen Elizabeth on troopship duties from USA. She had the title Fastest of the Greyhounds which was bestowed on her when she beat the frigate HMS Rapid by 30 yards over a 64 mile race, lasting two hours off the Firth of Forth in July 1971 at an average speed of 31.8knots. Served the RN for 27 years. Well worth a visit if you're in the area.
