Australian bulker 'Australian Purpose' of 1977
Melbourne-registered bulk carrier "Australian Purpose" (122,600 deadweight tons, completed May 1977 by Götaverken Oresundsvarvet A.B., Landskrona), owned by Australian Purpose Ltd., Hong Kong, & operated by Australian National Line, discharging iron ore at Fukuyama, Japan, on 23rd August 1983. She was sold to Chinese interests in 1989 & renamed "Tao Yuan Hai" under the PRC flag. She sank in the southern Indian Ocean on 27th May 1990 after developing cracks in her hull 2 days earlier.
