burnt-out tanker 'Miraflores', 1963

Italian-owned, Panama-registered oil tanker "Miraflores" (20,776 tons gross, built 1956 or 1958 - sources differ - in Genoa) laid up at Antwerp in June 1963. On 25th February 1963 she caught fire following a collision with the Houlder Bros. tanker "Abadesa" in the Westerschelde; several lives were lost. I cannot find any details of her subsequent history, but the "Abadesa" herself (as the "Emir Man" after several changes of ownership & name) caught fire after an explosion off Dubai in 1986 & had to be scrapped.

It was the captain's last trip before he should go on pension. His wife boarded in Flushing, the collision happened in Bath in the river Scheldt and amongst the victims was the captain.I was workung in that period as an agent for BP Tanker London who had chartered the vessel. Also the Abadesa was sailing with crude oil for the same company.

Of course, Mr. Willy Dupon refers to the master of the colliding ship abadesa; As a matter of fact a couple of years later I was on board a tanker whose master had been the master of Miraflors.
