What is this vessel, what does it do? wonders never cease

Looks like a pipe laying (reel) barge. Not pretty, in such a beautiful situation.

In simple terms it's a vessel that spools on rigid steel pipe from a spool base such as the one in this picture, then it lays the pipe at a given destination.The pipe is usually for oil and gas.It can also do the same for laying flexible flow lines (umbilicles)

This is the creepiest looking thing and it's been at Leith for over a month now. It looks like something out of a Scooby Doo cartoon. I'm glad I've finally found out what it does (apart from giving me the jitters everytime I see it).
