Hms manxman was laid down on 24/3/1939 and commissioned on 20/6/1941. She could steam at a rate of 40 knots and carry 160 mines. In 1942 she was torpedoed and the subsequent repairs took until 1945 to complete (missing almost half the war). In 1956 she assisted in the earthquake relief in the lebanon, this was when she was involved in the 'suez crisis' at the same time. Decommissioned in 1970 after serving as a training ship for engineer officers, working out of devonport. Broken up at newport in wales in September 1972.
(launch to breaking = 32 years)

I served aboard HMS Manxman from about Jan-Feb 1956 until mid 1957 in the Med Fleet, based in Malta. I was a National Service Seaman, employed in the Main Signals Office at first, then as bowman of the Fast Motor Boat. Rear Admiral Holland-Martin used Manxman as his base (a special super-structure was built on the quarter-deck to accommodate him and his retinue).
