Ships and Harbours
No: 16305   Contributor: Paul Strathdee   Year: 1965   Manufacturer: Fairfield, Govan, United Kingdom   Country: United Kingdom

The launch of the New Zealand ferry WAHINE at the Fairfield yard in Glasgow in July 1965. Completed in 1966 she operated the Wellington- Lyttelton Cook Strait service.
On April 10th 1968 in a ferocious storm she foundered on the approach to Wellington Harbour with the loss of 53 lives.
By a remarkable coincidence her predecessor built by Denny's at Dumbarton in 1913 was wrecked on a reef near Darwin in 1951 but without loss of life.
