I joined HMS WHITBY as a young MEA having flown out to Singapore and spent 3 weeks in Terror Barracks waiting for her and Andromeda. Plan was to return to UK via the Beira Patrol and South Africa but in fact we returned via Darwin, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga (tea and dancing girls on the King of Tonga's lawn), Pearl Harbour, San Diego, Acapulco, Panama Canal and home to Pompey. This would be 1971. One memory is of being made leader of the shore patrol in Pearl Harbour and the U.S. shore patrol being amazed when I refused a gun!
I remained in RN , mainly in submarines until 2000. I am now 68 and live in Dunfermline.
