Atene departing Gothenburg

2-masted gaff-rigged schooner photographed on 15 August 2010 between rain showers.
Built in 1909 by Fredriksöns Varv at Svendborg, Denmark. The first owner was called Rasmussen, of Strynö, who named the ship Emenual. He sailed her until 1916 when she was probably sold to Norway. The next appearance of this ship was in 1921 when, named Mull, she was sold into Swedish service. She was then named Anna Lisa, and by that time had a 35 hp engine. She was wrecked in 1927 and was at Björkenäs yard for repairs, with her rigging altered to become a galeass. Named Wanda, she re-entered the Swedish register in 1929. In 1939, with yet another owner, she was fitted with a 50 hp engine. After changing hand several more times, she became Atene in 1965, and was finally taken over by the Föreningen m/s Atene association in 1990. The association rebuilt her to as close to original as possible and conforming to the Swedish Maritime Administration rules. This took place at Hällevikstrands varv shipyard.
Further restoration took place at Stradby Värft in Denmark, with a new keel, and she was brought back to as new condition with much of the hull replaced. New machinery was installed and the cabin renovated. She is now based at Skärhamn, Sweden, on the west coast.
Sail area: 261.3 sq m. 28 hammocks, length overall: 31.3 m including the bowsprit, beam: 5.86 m, draught: 2.4 m. Displacement: 91 tons. Main engine: Volvo Penta TAMD 74 A, 184 kW, 250 hp. Equipped with radar, GPS, VHF, etc.
