Clipper Hereward ashore at Maroubra Beach

Full rigged iron Clipper "Hereward" driven ashore at Maroubra Beach near Sydney, N.S.W. 6th May 1898. Built Glasgow, 1877; Length 254 ft; Beam 39 ft.; Draught 23 ft.; 1,513 tons. Vessel insured for 6,000 pounds, sold for salvage for 550 pounds. All twenty-five crew safe ashore. Attempts to refloat in December 1898 failed and vessel destroyed by heavy seas on Dec.9th,1898.
