She is KINPURNIE CASTLE completed by the Greenock Dockyard in 1966 as CLAN ROSS the last of what were known as the Four Rs built there for Clan Line although they ran under the Union Castle banner. She was renamed in 1976 then became KINPURNIE UNIVERSAL and finally SYROS REEFER under which name she went to breakers in 1984. Sisters were Clans Ramsay, Ranald and Robertson.
Can anybody tell me what those large windows are at the monkeyisland (flybridge) f'wd against the funnel? Often wondered when I saw these sisters at sea, always forgot to ask by vhf. Tks & Rgds
Tks Paul, but I surely would have noticed that, when I was overtaking those vsls. Hopefully someone who actually sailed on them will reply.....? Rgds, with the answer
They are air intakes for Main Engines, AC plant and refrigeration. I was 2nd Mate on her when she was the Clan Ross. Not many ships overtook these boats as they normally steamed at about 17.5 knots, light or loaded

Thank you Neil Smith, for the detailed answer! At least you have solved my problem and I can sleep relaxed.... Re. overtaking those while steaming at a 17, 5 knots? You certainly must remember the well known reefers Polar Ecuador, P.Argentina, P.Paraguay, P.Uruguay, P.Colombia & P.Brazil, when we were ONLY overtaking other reefers with 22, 5 kts. The Swedish Winter class reefers from Salen-Stockholm were not to be beaten with their 25+ kts speed, however. Those were the years! When the fuel was cheap, the reefers were yachts and built at European yards, owned & crewed by Europeans and not the tincans from the Far East and crewed by 15 different nationalities with questionable credentials...
