Ships and Harbours
No: 12762   Contributor: Paul Strathdee   Year: 1963   Manufacturer: Harland and Wolff, Belfast, United Kingdom   Country: United Kingdom

Innovative all aft passenger liner completed for Shaw Savill at Belfast by Harland and Wolff in 1955 taken in Southampton Water in July 1963 by the late Donald Robertson whose photo was passed on to me.
In 1972 she was sold and renamed CALYPSO then later AZURE SEAS and OCEAN BREEZE and only went to breakers in 2003.
A near sister, NORTHERN STAR was built on Tyneside in 1962 but did not enjoy such a long life, going to breakers in 1975.

Superb photo of my favourite ship. I worked in Pursers Office 1967-69 and 1971 (her final voyage with Shaw Savill Line)
Also sailed as a passenger on Azure Seas ex san Pedro - what a transformation from immigrant liner to cruiseship.

A very nice boat I did ten trips on her as a engineer, she was well built and mantained.

You can nearly see the design of the famous SS Canberra in her.
