The original QUEEN MARYAnd some might even say the best; the Clyde steamer QUEEN MARY II photographed off Greenock in May 1974.
She was built as QUEEN MARY by Denny's at Dumbarton in 1933 and renamed at the request of Cunard. A portrait of HM Queen Mary was presented to her as a result and hung in her main Saloon.
She originally was twin funnelled but was reboilered in the late 1950s and emerged in the form seen here.
In 1977 she reverted to her original name but sadly was withdrawn at the end of that season.
She eventually moved to London and after lying for a period became a restaurant/ pub on the Embankment. Her two funnels were restored.
A new life now beckons for her in France as a hotel and she was towed from the Embankment in November 2009 in preparation for this. She is at Tilbury I believe to be lifted on to a semi submersible ship for the journey across the Channel.
