Boelwerf & Cockerill, Belgium
Boelwerf & Cockerill is a shipyard in Temse, Belgium. Boelwerf was founded in 1829 by Bernard Boel. Until 1900 it produced only wooden boats in low volumes, however this increased after the turn of that century. Production reached new heights at Boelwerf after the 2nd WW when orders from abroad came in and the yard, then known as 'J. Boel & Zonen' built on a good reputation. In 1980 the yard underwent some corporate reconstructions and became known as just Boelwerf.
In 1982 Boelwerf acquired the then bankrupt Cockerill Yards. However, due to the crisis in the international shipbuilding sector the company got into financial difficulties itself and was in turn declared bankrupt in 1992.
A last attempt at a restart was made in 1993 but this only lasted one year and unfortunately that was the end of the biggest Belgian shipbuilder.
